Students who have completed the 39 specified credits and 8 elective credits with a cumulative 3.0 GPA and a 3.0 GPA in required mathematics and science courses, are eligible to apply for the AHLT 258 seven-month,40 hour per week course taught at Corewell Health. This is an intensive 7 month clinical course . Upon satisfactory completion of the program, students will be prepared for the professional registry examination for histologic technicians. The histologic technician assists the pathologist by processing and preparing slides from surgical and autopsy tissues. The technician also performs a variety of special histochemical stains on tissue sections which aid the pathologist in the diagnosis of disease.

Students who have completed the 39 specified credits and 8 elective credits with a cumulative 3.0 GPA and a 3.0 GPA in required mathematics and science courses, and required shadow time, are eligible to apply for AHLT 258 a six-month, 40-hour-per-week course taught at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak, MI. in Royal. Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak, School of Histology Technology admits up to four students each year (Two candidates accepted for the September program start date and two candidates accepted for the February program start date). Applications must be returned to the clinical instructor by April 15 for admission for both September and February start dates. Students are qualified to submit their application to the School of Histology if they are currently enrolled in last semester prerequisites. Students must request their transcripts to be sent to the clinical instructor. An interview with the Medical Director, the Program Director, the clinical instructor, and one faculty member of the program may then be scheduled.
Admission is based on total GPA, the GPA in science and math, letters of recommendation, statement of career goals, required shadow experience, previous work experience and the interview results.
Conviction of a criminal offense may prohibit applicants from acceptance into the Histologic Technician clinicals at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak, MI. All applicants for a health profession license or registration in Michigan are required to submit fingerprints and undergo a background check. Students must pass the physical exam given by Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital Occupational Health, which includes drug and alcohol screening.
Pre-requisite: Must place at college level reading on the MCC placement test or successfully complete RDNG 030 or ENGL 100.
